The development of secure reading skills is prioritised by everyone at our schools. All children in Reception and Key Stage One receive daily phonics teaching.  We use the Read Write Inc reading and writing scheme. If children entering Key Stage Two still need support with their phonics, we put carefully targeted 'catch-up' teaching in place.

Please find the link to our RWI Phonics information page here.

Reading for pleasure is given high status to ensure that children enjoy the magic of stories, poetry and information books. We ensure that children hear adults read aloud every day, and we promote a culture that values high-quality texts.

Reading skills are further developed through whole-class reading and fluency sessions in KS2 with a clear focus on teaching the skills of 'Explanation', 'Retrieval', 'Inference' and 'Choice'. We encourage children to read regularly in school and at home - helping to develop their confidence, comprehension skills and fluency further.
